Raleigh 'Tax March' protesters demand release of Trump's tax returns

The Raleigh arm of the national "Tax March", as it's been dubbed, was organized by Progress NC Action. They joined other protests around the country demanding for transparency and accountability.

"We need to know what his entanglements are with other countries, with other people and we need to know if the tax plans that he is promoting benefit him and his family personally," Jen Ferris said.

Presidents are not required to release their tax returns. But President Trump is the first in roughly 40 years to refuse to release his full tax returns.

During his candidacy, he said he wouldn't release those returns because he was being audited. Since his inauguration, he's said people simply don't care to see them.

Many protesters are urging lawmakers to force the president to release his returns.

"We the people of the United States need to know who our president is invested in. This is very important," Drucella Roberts said.

ProgressNC.org is circulating a petition calling on lawmakers to pass legislation that would require presidential candidates to release tax returns prior to appearing on ballots. That petition has nearly 6,000 signatures right now.

The North Carolina Republican Party has not yet commented.
