SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Protesters in dozens of cities across the country, including Syracuse, took to the streets Saturday and called on President Donald Trump to release his tax return.
A crowd that organizers said numbered several hundred people gathered outside the James M. Hanley Federal Building in downtown Syracuse Saturday morning.
Protesters wielded signs and marched up and down the street. The rally in Syracuse was organized by the New Feminists for Justice with help from the CNY Solidarity Coalition and other groups.
The protests, which organizers dubbed the Tax March, were scheduled Saturday in nearly 150 cities. They happened as lawmakers begin focusing on tax reform and as the deadline this year to file tax returns approaches.
Critics have argued that Americans should know about Trump's business ties and potential conflicts of interest.
Trump is the first major party nominee in more than 40 years not to release his tax returns, saying it was because he was under audit. He later said that voters don't care. For four decades, presidents and major party nominees have released some of their tax returns, with the exception of Gerald Ford.
Trump, who spent the morning at his Florida golf course, avoided several hundred protesters when his motorcade took a circuitous route back to Mar-A-Lago, his Palm Beach, Florida, estate.
Tuesday is the deadline for taxpayers to file returns.
